I always keep an eye out for good deals on gently used or secondhand cloth diapers via local marketplace and Craigslist type sites. You never know what you could come across. Recently, I found the score of a lifetime! I’m talking to all you frugal ladies, all you bargain hunters, I’ve done it. 11 BUM GENIUS cloth diapers, 3 wet bags, 1 swim diaper, 75 BUCKS.
YES, I mean YAAAAAASSSSS!
There were six all-in-ones and five pocket. Literally never worn. Maybe tried once, and washed but they were practically BRAND SPANKING NEW. I could not stop talking about it with my husband, he was so annoyed by the time I finally put them into my diaper rotation that he actually stopped responding to my “oh my gosh I love these diapers, I’m so excited, I can’t believe I found such a good deal”.
I’m not sure if you know this, but Bum Genius is an American brand, made in America and all the good stuff. Another point of excitement I kept bringing up with my husband.
Past brands I’ve used
For a long time, I was a huge supporter of Noras Nursery Diapers, and I still am because you can’t bet their prices and patterns, SO CUTE! I would venture to say they are the best price and quality for being made in China.

Unfortunately, like I just mentioned, they are made in China. It’s so hard to escape two things as an american..Chinese made products and plastic..which is most of the time manufactured in China as well. Then ends up contributed to the global plastic crisis in southeast Asia.
ANYWAY! Back from the tangent. In conclusion, Noras Nursery just don’t last as long as Bum Genius ones do. I bought a 50 diaper lot on offer up (or let go) when my first was about a year old. Those were secondhand and lasted throughout his entire time in diapers and potty training. Then my second was born and those have lasted us until about now..15 months in. so they were THIRD hand coming into Gus’ life.
Noras Nursery Cloth Diapers vs Bum Genius Cloth Diapers
The Nora’s Nursery ones already are just heavily stained, and the snaps aren’t secure like they once were. The elastic is very stretched out and they do leak on occasion. I can definitely feel the delaminating process beginning too.
They have been in my diaper rotation for some time and I think their retirement has finally come. I will keep them as back ups and car diapers if I ever need one and haven’t gotten to the laundry. Always a good trick to have some spares on hand!
I’ve never tried Bum Genius cloth diapers brand new, and I’m here to tell you, dang it! They are nice!! The elastic is so fresh and tight. The snaps are secure. It’s refreshing to be able to diaper my baby consciously, economically, and adorably!
Let’s talk savings real quick. I buy so many things second hand. When I do buy new, it is a LONG process. I price compare, find the manufacturer, then discuss it sixteen times with my husband who really doesn’t care so much about the topic of which socks, diapers etc are best to buy.
Onward to savings!
Savings of buying secondhand
All in ones – 5 x 21.95 = 109.75
Pocket – 6 x 16.95 = 101.70
wet bags – 3 x $12.95 =38.85
swim diaper by I play- + $10
TOTAL COST NEW (would have been)- $260.30 (plus tax I imagine)
I saved $185.30
!!!!! CAN WE JUST TAKE ONE MINUTE TO THINK ABOUT THAT ? !!!!!!
That’s two full gallons of gas or three weeks of groceries!
My husband gave me a choice when I brought this deal to his attention. He asked me if I’d rather have the diapers or my last Christmas present. My last one probably wasn’t going to be $75 but I easily knew the answer to that question. I said diapers just in case you skipped all the other paragraphs..
Is buying used cloth diapers worth it?
It certainly can be. You’ve really just got to keep your eye out on the resale sites and don’t be afraid to ask questions about style, brand, elastic wear, those sort of details help to know the quality and life span.
I have seen plenty of people selling their entire cloth diaper lot because they tried it for one week and said “nope, not for me” and sold them all at half cost just to get some of their money back.
I say it’s totally worth it. It just takes patience and a bit of knowledge on the buying end so that you don’t end up with crappy diapers that won’t last even a month in a new baby’s life. That’s what I love about cloth diapers, they last much longer than we think we can if we know how to take care of them.
What do you think? Would you buys cloth diapers used if it was a good deal and they were barely worn? Or would you rather buy new and not buy used?
In gratitude,
Tayler
