Babies require a ton of stuff. FALSE. Babies are expensive. FALSE. I can’t go zero waste with kids. FALSE. I started to go zero waste and live a lower impact life when I was first pregnant with my now three year old. It seemed daunting, but now I realize it really wasn’t scary. I just had to think a little harder about purchases and be more conscious of general consumption. Not too hard, just more mindful. My zero waste journey is just that, a journey. Although, I have made some great strides in the realm of a less waste baby. This is just one piece of my journey. Come take a look inside my zero waste diaper bag.
Inside my zero waste diaper bag
- Two cloth diapers- a quick pocket diaper from Nora’s Nursery and a Prefold from Green Mountain Diapers with PUL cover, for a back up back up, you never know when they have a huge pee then decide to poop right in a clean diaper!
- Wipes- cloth wipes and some handmade flannel cotton ones, about 6-7 is enough for an outing.
- Wet bag- pictured in the other photo because it was in the laundry with my others! I bring one of my smaller travel ones from BumGenius and fold it up in the back pocket of my bag.
- Reused peri-bottle water bottle- I don’t use a solution, I just use plain water and this works perfectly! It’s the right size, can close/lock and holds a good amount of water!
- Baby powder- in a reused spice shaker. I use straight cornstarch. I don’t add anything else because there’s really no need. Occasionally, I’ll have coconut oil, or Matys diaper rash cream on hand too, in a small, reused jar in case his bum starts to get a little red.
- Foldable changing mat for poops- totally optional, it’s just nice to have when it’s a messy change in the trunk of your car! Or even in the front seat!
- Snappis– got to have this with the prefolds. I just always have these on hand because there have been times where I haze zero diapers (because I forgot to replenish my bag) and I have used a blanket or towel to wrap around my littlest and the Snappi to keep it all in place.
- Nursing cover- a lightweight thrifted poncho works perfectly. I have a heavier weight large scarf I use in the winter months
- Toy- to occupy his hands while I’m changing him. I bring two because sometimes the first one he loses interest in. They are a silicone pop toy and a wooden train car.
- Small blanket- for warmth, comfort, a changing pad, a burp cloth, car seat cover, play mat, basically anything extra this blanket can be!
- Spare onesie, socks, sun hat- the socks and hat are for if we’re going to the playground or a longer trip. Really a just in case option. The onesie is for any leaks he may have along the way!
- Handmade ring sling- this rolls up so easily and works great if he doesn’t want to sit in the cart or just if were walking around somewhere. I made it too so that’s just a fun fact! Yay mama!

The diaper bag itself was a gift at my first sons baby shower. This bag can fit SO MUCH STUFF. I’m talking my stuff, my toddlers, baby’s, and lunch for everyone. It’s incredible. Some days I think it’s Mary Poppins bag come back to life. Just for emphasis, it is INCREDIBLE. Its a Halvea backpack.
Having a zero waste diaper bag is an easy way to keep the waste at bay when I’m out and about. I can just refill water bottles as needed, never need to buy snacks and we don’t ever eat out so take out waste doesn’t happen.
It’s always good to be prepped and that’s something I’ve learned with kids. Even if I don’t think I need it, I may need it. These items have been my go to for the last three years. My diaper bag has just adapted to two children and an older son now. My toddlers part 2 of this is coming out next!
